Do you have an athletic child? Participating in sports is great for a child, but there are risks. Injuries to a child’s head and teeth can be expensive and have serious consequences for their health. How can you protect them so they can keep having fun? At Helotes Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, we believe that athletic mouthguards are the way to go.
Why Are Mouthguards Important?
Injuries are always a risk when a kid plays sports. When things get intense, a kid can suffer from a chipped or broken tooth. Teeth can get knocked out entirely or cut through their lip. Mouthguards help prevent these accidents. They can even reduce the severity of a concussion!
What Kinds of Mouthguards Are There?
There are a few different types of mouthguards. Stock mouthguards are cheap, but they don’t provide the protection you want. The sizes are all set, so odds are, they won’t fit. This means they won't actually protect your kid’s teeth. They’re uncomfortable, too, so your kid won’t want to wear it at all. Boil-and-bite mouthguards are a little better. When heated, these become flexible and mold to the wearer’s teeth. However, these still don’t give the best protection.
At Helotes Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics we offer custom-fit mouthguards. These provide the best protection against dental injuries. Our dentists create these specifically for your child’s mouth, so they’re comfortable and effective. While they’re pricier than other mouthguards, they’re worth it because of how well they protect against even costlier injuries. When your child comes in for regular preventive care, bring the mouthguard with you to the appointment. We’ll make sure it’s in good shape and offer any cleaning tips as needed.
